There is a ton of noise out there. We’ve all heard claims of all sorts from every type of diet imaginable. The Cabbage Soup diet, The Subway diet, High fat diets, low fat diets, High Protein or High Carb… how do you choose?

What about the celebrities that are seemingly able to maintain their weight for just long enough to get the testimonial filmed and the magazine covers shot, only to gain it all back until a new diet company offers them a new contract? Do we trust them?

How many diets can you name off the top of your head? Popular in mainstream America right now are literally hundreds of diets. They all claim to work magic even though many completely contradict others. Why do they seem to work for some people?

All diets work because of two simple principles that they all share.

High fat diets and low fat diets both work. Athletes win medals eating foods that many popular diets say will make you gain fat and sap your energy. There are countless examples of fad diets that prescribe exactly the opposite formula of other fad diets.

It may be easy to dismiss the fad diet believers as kooks but what if there is something else at work? These seemingly crazy diets do absolutely work for some people.

Every diet seems to start strong. We all feel the burn and the energy boost but inevitably the diet stops working. At the same time the diet loses effectiveness we feel the need to cheat. When we cheat we feel guilty and sometimes console ourselves with more cheating... eventually ending the diet all together.


Cheating is actually a return to sanity. It is nature’s way of telling you that the diet is not working and not giving you what you need. A person certainly can’t live by apple cider vinegar or chocolate alone…

All diets work... for a time. This is because of the two things they all have in common. To understand the two things we have to think about the root reasons why we gain weight and how every diet affects those causes.

Mindfulness:

During our normal routine most of us eat mindlessly. We eat while doing other things; in front of the TV or the computer, in the car, at the movies. We don't pay much attention to our food. Typically we eat for big sensations; the feeling of being full, sweets, salts, and fats. When we start a new diet we are mindful of what and how we are eating... we eat only what we need instead of eating out of boredom or just to feel full.

Genetic Triggers:

The human history is one of constant famine. We gain weight because our ancestors were the survivors! Our genes are adapted to put on weight to help us survive famine. This may seem obvious... but the part that isn't so obvious is how our genes follow the pattern of famine.

In the pattern of the famines of our ancestors time, food usually didn't run out all at once. At the onset of famine food sources generally shifted from variety and plenty to some lower quality foods. The lower quality foods might be potatoes or corn or some other staple that has the calories we need but not the nutrition.

Our genes recognize a ratio of higher calories and lower nutrition as the approach of famine.

When our genes are triggered this way our bodies go into conservation mode by lowering our energy and upping our storage.

A new diet signals our genes with a change. The change signals the end of the famine! The change tells our genes that "spring has come". It's not time to store and conserve anymore.

It's not the magic of the diet that makes us lose weight but the fact that we change that makes weight burn off.

But both of these effects only last for so long...

  • As the diet becomes the routine we become less mindful about what and how we are eating. We don't have to think about what we are eating once we've adapted to the new diet
  • The genetic effect of the change the new diet created wears off after a few weeks
  • Our bodies cry out for variety and over time this will drive us to cheat
  • Cheat guilt drains the energy and the will to maintain the diet

We eventually give it up, usually in worse shape than when we started... and worse yet... thinking it's all our fault.

It is never your fault when a diet fails.
